NBC News reported Monday that Iran had warned Washington of the possible activation of terrorist sleeper cells within the United States just days before American forces launched strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
According to unnamed sources cited by the broadcaster, former U.S. President Donald Trump received the threat through an intermediary during the G7 summit in Canada last week. The communication allegedly stated that Iran would respond by activating sleeper cells in the U.S. if Washington proceeded with an attack.
Despite the warning, the United States struck three major Iranian nuclear facilities — in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan— in the early hours of Sunday.
Following the airstrikes, Trump declared that “Tehran must now agree to end this war” or face “far more serious consequences.”
The U.S. attack drew strong international condemnation. UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the strikes as a “dangerous escalation” and a threat to global peace. Russia denounced the operation as a gross violation of international law and the UN Charter, calling on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to respond with impartiality.
In a parallel development, Israel launched a large-scale military operation dubbed “Rising Lion” on June 13. Israeli air forces carried out a series of strikes across Iran — including the capital, Tehran — targeting what it claimed was a clandestine military nuclear program. The attacks reportedly killed several senior Iranian military officers and nuclear scientists, and damaged key nuclear facilities such as Natanz and Fordow.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, condemned the Israeli assault as a “crime”, promising a “bitter and terrible fate” for Israel.
Iran responded hours later with Operation True Promise 3, launching retaliatory strikes on Israeli military targets on the evening of June 13.
Despite the escalation, Iran has repeatedly denied that its nuclear program has a military dimension. On June 18, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that the agency had not seen concrete evidence indicating Iran is actively pursuing nuclear weapons.
A similar assessment was shared by U.S. intelligence sources, CNN reported on June 17, noting that recent evaluations did not find proof that Iran is working on a nuclear weapons program.
Former British ambassador and human rights activist Craig Murray told RIA Novosti that Iran has acted with “extraordinary responsibility and patience” over the years, even in the face of provocations from Israel.
