Fulham’s Super Eagles stars, Ola Aina and Alex Iwobi, have expressed hopes that a successful campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) could spark greater interest among players eligible to represent Nigeria. Both players, key members of Nigeria’s national team, believe that a strong showing at AFCON 2024 in Côte d’Ivoire would not only bring pride to the country but also attract dual-nationality players looking to join the Super Eagles.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Aina emphasized the impact that winning a major competition could have on Nigeria’s appeal to the diaspora players. “Success at AFCON could be a turning point for the Super Eagles. It’s a chance to showcase our talent and show other players that Nigeria is the team to be with,” Aina remarked. He pointed out that the unity and dedication within the current squad are key factors that other players would find attractive.

Iwobi, who has long championed Nigeria on the international stage, echoed Aina’s sentiments, noting that a strong AFCON performance could increase the country’s standing in world football and encourage more players of Nigerian descent to choose Nigeria over other national teams. “When players see Nigeria competing and winning at the top level, it naturally makes the Super Eagles more attractive,” Iwobi said. “We have so much talent, both at home and abroad, and success is the best way to bring everyone together.”

With a robust lineup, including top players from leagues around the world, the Super Eagles are among the favorites heading into AFCON 2024. The Fulham duo stressed that their goal is not just to win but to build a legacy that inspires future generations of Nigerian talent. As more dual-nationality players consider their international futures, Aina and Iwobi hope their commitment to Nigeria, combined with potential AFCON success, will make the Super Eagles the first choice for emerging stars across the globe.

The Super Eagles begin their AFCON campaign in January, with fans and players alike optimistic that this year’s tournament could mark a new era for Nigerian football.
