Japanese PM Clings to Power Amidst Election Setback

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is facing strong criticism after his ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lost ground in the latest national election. While his party still holds a narrow majority through its coalition with the Komeito party, the results show a clear message: many voters are frustrated and want change.

Kishida, who has been in office since 2021, addressed the nation after the vote. “We hear the voices of the people, and we take them seriously,” he said. “We must reflect and move forward with responsibility.”

Many voters say they are concerned about rising living costs, a slow economy, and some of Kishida’s policy choices, including plans for more defense spending. The election results suggest that people across different parts of the country — from rural communities to large cities — are feeling left behind or unheard.

Inside Kishida’s own party, some members are reportedly questioning whether he should continue leading. While no official challenge has been made, political observers say the coming months could bring a leadership contest if support doesn’t improve.
