Jos Businessman Sentenced to Three Years for Breach of Trust, Cheating

A Magistrate’s Court in Jos on Tuesday sentenced a 35-year-old businessman, Abdullahi Mohammad, to three years in prison for criminal breach of trust and cheating.

Presiding Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos delivered a summary judgment after the convict pleaded guilty to the charges.

In her ruling, Magistrate Bokkos offered Mohammad the option of a ₦100,000 fine in lieu of imprisonment. Additionally, she ordered him to pay ₦697,000 in compensation to the complainant or face an extra two years in prison if he fails to pay.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Gotus Samson, informed the court that the case was reported on May 5 at the Area Command Metro Police Station by the complainant, Hassan Usman.

According to Sgt. Samson, the convict received second-hand clothes worth ₦697,000 from the complainant in 2024 under the agreement that he would sell the items and return the proceeds. However, Mohammad diverted the funds for personal use instead.

The prosecutor noted that the offence violated provisions of the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
