The Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase.
In a condolence message on Monday, CRAN President, Mr. Olalekan Olabulo, described Arase as a visionary reformer, fine officer, mentor, and steadfast friend of journalists covering crime and security.
Olabulo recalled that CRAN’s relationship with Arase dated back to his time as Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba.
“Even after rising to the peak of his career as IGP and later Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), he remained close to us. He consistently attended our annual lectures and awards, or ensured capable representation. His humility, respect, and commitment endeared him to our association,” he said.
He further noted that Arase valued the media’s role in accountability and nation-building, and often encouraged crime reporters to uphold professionalism.
“His death is a rude shock. Nigeria has lost one of its most distinguished policing minds, and CRAN has lost a true ally. We commiserate with his family, the Nigeria Police Force, the PSC, and the nation, while praying for God’s comfort and the repose of his soul,” Olabulo added.
