Following the directive from Aviation Minister Mr. Festus Keyamo, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has been tasked with ensuring that foreign airlines use local caterers for in-flight meals starting January 1, 2025. Keyamo defended this decision in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the practice of foreign airlines serving reheated meals to Nigerian passengers is no longer acceptable. He argued that this change will support local businesses and boost Nigeria’s economy.

Keyamo clarified that the directive does not mandate foreign airlines to serve only local dishes; local caterers can prepare a variety of meals, including continental options. He emphasized that the outdated practice of serving frozen meals from abroad is unacceptable. Addressing food safety concerns, he assured that Nigeria has quality control agencies to ensure hygiene and safety standards for meals prepared by local caterers.

He also highlighted the need for mutual trust between Nigeria and foreign airlines, stating, “If they expect us to trust the quality of food they bring into our country, they should trust our vetting process for local caterers.” Keyamo concluded by stressing the importance of supporting local businesses, noting that Nigeria’s large population should benefit from catering opportunities that strengthen the local economy.
