In the wake of escalating violence in Plateau and Benue states—which has tragically resulted in the deaths of over 100 people in recent weeks—Vice President Kashim Shettima is scheduled to visit Plateau State today. His visit is seen as a critical component of the federal government’s broader initiative to quell the ongoing unrest, de-escalate tensions, and promote sustainable peace in the troubled region.
This high-level visit follows a series of brutal attacks carried out by unidentified gunmen on several communities, particularly in Bokkos and Bassa local government areas of Plateau State. The coordinated assaults have not only left scores dead and many others injured but have also sparked widespread outrage across the country. Civil society groups, religious leaders, and concerned citizens have intensified their calls for immediate and decisive government action to address the deteriorating security situation.
Speaking during a humanitarian assessment tour of the affected areas in Bassa on Saturday, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, confirmed the Vice President’s impending visit. According to Dr. Yilwatda, the move was initiated under the direct instruction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, underscoring the administration’s commitment to supporting victims, restoring normalcy, and holding perpetrators accountable.
Vice President Shettima’s visit is expected to include meetings with local leaders, victims’ families, security agencies, and other stakeholders. Analysts see the visit as a pivotal opportunity for the government to demonstrate empathy, build trust with affected communities, and unveil a concrete roadmap for peace and reconstruction.
