Kogi Boat Mishap: 24 Passengers Rescued, 14 Bodies Recovered, 42 Others Missing

Tragedy struck in Kogi State when a passenger boat capsized, leaving at least 14 people dead, 42 missing, and 24 rescued.

The incident, which occurred along the River Niger in the Ibaji Local Government Area, involved a boat reportedly carrying more than 80 passengers. Eyewitnesses said the vessel was heading to a market when it overturned after hitting a submerged tree.

Locals and emergency responders rushed to the scene, rescuing some survivors while also recovering bodies from the river. Among the victims were women and children.

Confirming the incident, officials from the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said search and rescue operations were still ongoing.

“So far, 24 passengers have been rescued alive, while 14 bodies have been recovered. About 42 people are still unaccounted for, and rescue efforts continue,” a SEMA spokesperson stated.

The Kogi State Government has expressed shock at the tragedy, assuring that it is working with federal agencies, local divers, and security operatives to intensify the search for the missing passengers.

Boat mishaps have become recurring tragedies in riverine communities across Nigeria, often blamed on overloading, poor safety measures, and lack of life jackets.

Authorities have again urged operators to adhere strictly to safety guidelines to prevent further loss of lives.
