A middle-aged nursing mother and her one-year-old child narrowly escaped death on Thursday after their home in Awolowo, Tanke area of Ilorin, was engulfed in flames. The victims, who were fast asleep, were only saved by the desperate shouts of neighbors who noticed thick smoke billowing from the building.
Eyewitnesses say the fire could have turned deadly if not for the swift intervention of a local resident, Mr. Owolabi, who raised the alarm and contacted the Kwara State Fire Service. Officials arrived at the scene promptly, battling the flames and preventing further destruction.
A statement by the Fire Service’s Head of Media and Publicity, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed that while the inferno damaged the sitting room of a two-bedroom flat, the timely rescue operation prevented a full-blown catastrophe.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns over fire safety awareness and emergency response systems in residential areas, as residents demand better preventive measures to avoid future disasters.
