KWGIS Insists on Approval for All Development Projects, Halts Unauthorized Constructions/Vop

Ilorin – The Kwara State Geographic Information Service (KWGIS) has reiterated the necessity for all development projects in the state, whether private or government-led, to obtain proper land use approvals before commencement.

In a statement issued on Saturday, KWGIS Executive Chairman ESV AbdulKareem Babatunde Sulyman emphasized that the agency has been running public awareness campaigns on radio to educate developers about these legal requirements.

“This is a fundamental rule. When individuals or government agencies bypass these essential urban development regulations, we are obligated not only to halt the projects but also to impose necessary fines,” Sulyman stated.

He cited the case of the Pavilion, a new urban development project under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, which, according to KWGIS, has not secured the necessary approvals. As a result, work on the site has been stopped until compliance is ensured.

“All government projects—local, state, and federal—must adhere to these protocols. Since this approval process has not been followed, workers on site have been directed to fulfill the legal requirements before resuming work,” Sulyman added.

The agency also took action against two private construction projects: Peace Pharmaceutical along Asa Dam bypass and HRA along Lubcon Road, both of which were sealed off due to lack of requisite permits. Developers have been instructed to meet regulatory standards before continuing their work.

KWGIS stressed that Development Control activities are enforced in line with the law to regulate construction projects and ensure public safety. The agency warned that it will continue monitoring compliance to prevent future structural failures or unsafe developments.
