The Labour Party has advised the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to shelve its planned salary increase for political office holders, describing the move as insensitive given Nigeria’s current economic realities.
The party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Tony Akeni, issued the warning in a statement on Friday in Abuja. He said the proposal was “unconscionable” at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with hardship.
Akeni described the plan as a “misadventure” and urged the commission to retrace its steps in the national interest. Instead of raising salaries for politicians, he said, RMAFC should push for an upward review of the minimum wage from the current ₦70,000 to better support struggling workers.
Citing global concern, Akeni noted that the U.S. government had recently advocated for an increase in Nigeria’s minimum wage.
“If a foreign nation could demonstrate such empathy towards our suffering citizens, the RMAFC chairman and members have no valid excuse not to do more,” he added.
