Labour Union Proposes Different Minimum Wages for Different Regions

Labour unions in the North East have proposed N560,000 per month as national minimum wage.

While the branches of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, in the six states of the North East recommended a monthly minimum wage of N560,000, the Adamawa and Bauchi state governments recommended N45,000.

The six branches of the two major labour groups, which made a presentation today during the North East Zonal Public Hearing of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage, said they had carefully worked out economic imperatives to arrive at the N560,000.

The public hearing organized by the federal government on minimum wage kicked off in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital today.

The public hearing was declared open by the representative of the zonal chairman of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage, Nonrom Theophilus.

Meanwhile, in Akwa Ibom state, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, has demanded N850,000 as minimum wage for workers.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has proposed N709,000 as the new minimum wage for workers.

The Congress made the presentation at the ongoing public hearing on minimum wage in Abuja.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) on the other hand proposed N447, 000 for consideration as the new minimum wage.

The two labour unions said their figures were largely influenced by the present realities.

However, Kwara, Nasarawa, and Niger failed to propose any figure to pay their workers.

VOP News gathered that only Plateau state proposed N81,000 for consideration as the new national minimum.
