A Magistrates’ Court in Jos on Monday sentenced a 26-year-old labourer, Abraham John, to 18 months in prison for stealing three bags of cement.
The Magistrate, Irene Pati, summarily tried and convicted John after he pleaded guilty to the charge.
In her judgment, Pati gave the convict an option of fines: six months in prison or a fine of ₦20,000 for trespass, and one year in prison or a fine of ₦30,000 for theft.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Ijuptil Thiawur, told the court that the matter was reported at the Gada Biu Police Station on September 2 by the complainant, Samuel Danchung.
Thiawur explained that John trespassed into Danchung’s premises and stole three bags of cement, but was apprehended shortly after.
He added that the stolen items were recovered during police investigation, noting that the offence contravenes the Plateau Penal Code Law.
