Lagos Governor Sanwo-Olu Endorses NBA-Nigeria Deal on Basketball Development

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to partnering with the Nigerian leadership of the National Basketball Association (NBA) to accelerate basketball development across the state.

Sanwo-Olu said NBA Nigeria’s initiative to create pathways for young athletes through international exposure and recognition aligns with his government’s vision of using sports as a tool for empowerment, social inclusion, and economic growth.

The governor made the remarks on Friday in a statement signed by his Special Adviser, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, following a courtesy visit by NBA Nigeria, led by NBA Africa Investor, Mr. Tunde Folawiyo, at Lagos House, Marina.

He assured the delegation of Lagos State’s collaboration with NBA Nigeria and other stakeholders to develop infrastructure, strengthen grassroots programmes, and unlock youth potential for sustainable basketball growth.

“For us as a government, we must encourage private sector participation and act as strong enablers. We are committed to developing young people’s interest in basketball and investing in sports facilities,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor disclosed that 10 mini stadia under construction across the state would each include standard basketball courts, to enhance grassroots sports and promote inclusivity.

Sanwo-Olu commended Folawiyo and the NBA leadership for their passion and commitment to advancing basketball in Africa, praising the African Basketball League’s contributions over the past five years.

In his remarks, Folawiyo lauded the governor for his investments in sports and infrastructure. He reaffirmed NBA Africa’s commitment to grassroots basketball and pledged a partnership that extends beyond the game to include investment and capacity development.

“As a proud Lagosian, I commend Governor Sanwo-Olu’s efforts in supporting sports. Our goal is to strengthen grassroots basketball, build a competitive African league, and create opportunities for future NBA players from Africa,” Folawiyo said.
