Lagos Health Commissioner Warns of Highly Contagious Cholera Strain

The Lagos State Health Commissioner, Prof Akin Abayomi, has said laboratory tests carried out on samples have confirmed that the disease outbreak in the state is due to cholera and the identified strain is highly aggressive and contagious, with potential for widespread dissemination.

Abayomi made this known on his Instagram page today while giving an update on the cholera outbreak in the state.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC warned the public of the increasing trend of cholera cases as the rainy season intensifies.

The centre noted that the 10 states contributing 90 per cent to the burden of the current cholera outbreak include Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Imo, Nasarawa, and Lagos states.

Also, the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA has urged residents to properly bag and dispose of their waste, especially animal waste, during and after this year’s Eid-El-Kabir celebrations.

Managing Director/CEO of the Agency, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin gave the advice in a statement issued by the organisation, noting that comprehensive measures were being implemented to ensure a clean and hygienic environment during the festivities, with service providers working assiduously.

He urged residents to cooperate with the agency by bagging and containerising waste generated during and after this period, for seamless evacuation by PSP operators.
