The 5th edition of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum commenced in Maiduguri on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, bringing together regional leaders, policymakers, and international development partners to address pressing challenges in the Lake Chad region.
The forum, themed “Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin: Consolidating Gains, Commitment to Peace, Cross-Border Cooperation, Security, and Sustainable Development for a Resilient Community,” focused on tackling insecurity, environmental degradation, and poverty in the region.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON, represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at the high-level gathering. Also in attendance were representatives from the United Nations, the African Union Commission, the British High Commission, and the African Development Bank, among other stakeholders.
In his remarks, Senator Ahmad Lawan, representing Yobe North Senatorial District, emphasized the need for regional collaboration to address the complex challenges facing the Lake Chad Basin. He highlighted commitments made by governors to initiatives such as recharging Lake Chad, restoring degraded ecosystems, and fostering transboundary trade.
“The challenges facing the Lake Chad Basin transcend national borders, making regional cooperation essential. The forum underscored the importance of integrated strategies to manage shared water resources and address the humanitarian crisis,” Senator Lawan stated.
Discussions also centered on promoting sustainable development that balances economic growth with environmental preservation. The forum called for investments in renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, and education to empower communities and create long-term opportunities.
Senator Lawan commended President Tinubu’s leadership in fostering regional cooperation and expressed appreciation to Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni and the organizing team for hosting a successful event.
The Lake Chad Basin, a vital ecological and economic hub, has suffered significant setbacks due to climate change and insecurity. The forum reaffirmed the collective resolve to implement strategic policies aimed at revitalizing the region and ensuring a resilient future for millions of its inhabitants.
The outcomes of the meeting are expected to drive long-term solutions and reinforce the commitment of regional leaders toward peace, security, and sustainable development in the Lake Chad Basin.
