Lakurawa terrorists, locally referred to as bandits, on Tuesday afternoon, ambushed the convoy of Jafaru Mohammad Ali Damisa, the Member representing Borgu and Agwara Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, killing a soldier and injuring several others.
Voice of the People (VOP) gathered that the assailants also vandalised about 11 vehicles during the attack, which occurred along the Lumma–Babanna Road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The attack reportedly occurred while the lawmaker was travelling to Babanna town for an official engagement, catching his security team and aides by surprise.
According to VOP findings, the assailants — heavily armed and strategically positioned along the road — opened fire between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., causing panic among members of the entourage, including security escorts and political supporters.
Sources familiar with the incident told Voice of the People (VOP) that one soldier was killed instantly, while about eight others sustained various degrees of injuries.
“The wounded personnel were immediately evacuated to the General Hospital, New Bussa, where they are currently receiving medical attention,” a source disclosed.
Another eyewitness confirmed that at least four supporters of Hon. Damisa were hit by stray bullets, though medical sources later confirmed that no civilian fatalities were recorded.
VOP further gathered that the attackers vandalised about 11 vehicles in the convoy, riddling them with bullets and causing extensive damage.
All damaged vehicles were later evacuated from the scene as of the time of filing this report.
Despite the intensity of the ambush, Hon. Damisa reportedly escaped unhurt, thanks to the swift response of his security escorts and the timely reinforcement from troops stationed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Babanna.
The combined forces engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun duel, which eventually forced them to retreat into the forest.
Security operations are currently underway in the area to track down the attackers and restore normalcy along the Lumma–Babanna route.
