Senator Ibrahim Lamido has resigned from the All Progressives Congress, citing worsening insecurity and hardship affecting his constituents in Sokoto East.
Mr Lamido announced his resignation on Saturday via his official X account, stating that the decision takes immediate effect.
“I, Senator Ibrahim Lamido, representing the good people of Sokoto East Senatorial District, hereby resign from the APC with immediate effect,” he said.
He explained that his departure was driven by concerns over the party’s inability to adequately address insecurity and protect the welfare of the people he represents.
Security concerns and growing hardship
The senator highlighted persistent bandit attacks across communities in Sokoto East, noting that several villages have been overrun, leading to displacement and destruction of livelihoods.
“My decision is based on the party’s failure to safeguard the people I represent and the hardship currently being faced by them,” he added.
He lamented that repeated appeals for intervention and support had not yielded meaningful results.
Mr Lamido said residents of his district are facing severe humanitarian challenges, stressing that insecurity has compounded economic hardship for many families.
“My people are enduring untold hardship. Bandits have destroyed entire communities,” he said, warning that the situation continues to deteriorate.
According to the lawmaker, his decision followed extensive consultations with political associates, community leaders, and constituents, who supported the move to seek an alternative political platform.
He, however, did not disclose his next political destination.
Call for action
The senator urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to tackle banditry and restore peace in Sokoto State and other affected northern regions.
He emphasised that protecting lives and property remains the primary responsibility of the government, warning that continued inaction could worsen the humanitarian crisis.
The resignation adds to growing political tensions in Nigeria’s northwest and underscores increasing pressure on the ruling party over insecurity and governance challenges ahead of future elections.
