A former Nigerian presidential media aide, Laolu Akande, has expressed strong disapproval of U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent executive order banning birthright citizenship. Signed on Trump’s inauguration day, the policy has sparked widespread debate and drawn criticism from several quarters.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Akande described the move as excessive and detrimental. While acknowledging Trump’s broader agenda to promote American interests, he raised concerns about the implications of such policies.
“Well, my issue isn’t with Mr. Trump’s vision to prioritize America or even his insular approach,” Akande explained. “What troubles me is the impact of his style of politics and the language that accompanies it. For example, banning birthright citizenship affects not only Americans but also many Nigerians who could be caught in that web. That’s an overreach.”
Akande argued that the executive order contradicts the founding principles of the United States, which champion inclusivity and opportunity.
“This move violates the spirit of the founding fathers and the Constitution. America was built on the idea of being a melting pot where the best from around the world could thrive. This action runs counter to that vision,” he said.
He also emphasized the potential harm to America’s global image, noting that the executive order could undermine the country’s reputation as a beacon of hope and opportunity.
“My concern is not just about Nigerians who might be affected. It’s about the damage this does to America’s image. Issuing an executive order that seems to bypass constitutional principles is a desperate move,” Akande added.
The former spokesman called on the U.S. to reflect on its foundational values, cautioning that such policies could have far-reaching consequences for both domestic and international perceptions of the nation.
Trump’s executive order, alongside other sweeping policies announced on his first day in office, continues to generate heated debate both in the U.S. and abroad.
