Latest Update | Obanikoro says Buhari fulfilled his role

Former Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, stating that the late leader “played his part” in the service of the nation.

Voice Of the People (VOP) reports that Buhari died on Sunday in London after a period of illness. He was 82 years old.

Reacting to the news in an interview , Obanikoro offered prayers and heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family and the nation.

“We are from God and to Him we shall return,” he said. “He played his part—first as a military officer, then as a military head of state, and later as a democratically elected civilian president. My condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Obanikoro, who also served as Minister of State for Defence, prayed for the peaceful repose of the former president’s soul and asked God to grant him eternal rest.

Buhari, a former military general, first led Nigeria as Military Head of State from December 31, 1983, to August 27, 1985. Decades later, he returned to power as a civilian, winning the 2015 presidential election by defeating incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan—marking the first time in Nigeria’s history that a sitting president lost re-election.

He was re-elected for a second term in 2019 and served until the conclusion of his tenure in 2023.
