Lawmaker Commissions New School Facilities in Badagry

The lawmaker representing Badagry Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr. Sesi Whingan, on Tuesday commissioned several educational projects and launched student transportation initiatives across his constituency.

During the inauguration ceremony, Whingan reiterated his commitment to promoting education, describing the projects as a reflection of his dedication to the academic growth and well-being of children in Badagry.

Among the projects unveiled were a block of six classrooms at Mowo Community Secondary School and a block of four classrooms at Anglican Primary School, Gbanko. In addition, 14 school toilets were renovated at Ansar-Ud-Deen Junior Grammar School, alongside the refurbishment of a six-classroom block at St. Leo’s Primary School.

To support learning conditions, Whingan said whiteboards and markers were supplied to primary and secondary schools. Learning materials—including math sets, calculators, exercise books, pens, and pencils—were distributed to 2,000 students. The schools also received new desks and chairs to create a more comfortable learning environment.

As part of the initiative, Whingan also launched two free school buses, tagged Badagry Free School Ride, to provide safe and reliable transportation for students.

“These buses will help ensure that our children get to and from school safely,” he said. “This is more than transportation—it is a statement of our commitment to accessible education.”

Reflecting on the town’s historical significance, Whingan noted that Badagry was the birthplace of Western education in Nigeria, with the establishment of St. Thomas’ Anglican Primary School in 1842 by the Wesleyan Methodist Church.

“Today, we add a new chapter to that proud legacy,” he said. “As your representative, I remain committed to providing the resources our children need to succeed.”

Whingan encouraged students to make the most of the resources provided and called on parents and teachers to collaborate in preserving Badagry’s rich educational heritage.

Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun—represented by Mr. Dauda Hassan, the state’s Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of Education—commended the lawmaker for the free buses, describing the gesture as a major relief for underprivileged families.

Dr. Hakeem Shittu, Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, praised the initiative, calling the distributed materials “seeds of knowledge, empowerment, and opportunity.”

Education Secretary for Badagry Local Government, Alhaja Modinat Adebayo, lauded the improved learning infrastructure, saying the new facilities would greatly enhance the academic experience of students.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Emmanuel Ayeni of Mowo Junior Secondary School expressed gratitude to Whingan, saying the improved environment would inspire students to take their studies more seriously and make Badagry proud.
