Lawmakers Defend Controversial 2026 Electoral Act

Lawmakers have come out strongly in defense of the recently passed Electoral Act 2026, amid growing criticism from opposition parties, civil society groups, and electoral observers. Speaking at a press briefing, several senior legislators emphasized that the Act is designed to strengthen the electoral process, improve transparency, and ensure free and fair elections across the country.

According to the lawmakers, the Act introduces key reforms in voter registration, election monitoring, and result transmission, which they say will curb electoral malpractice and promote citizen confidence in the democratic process. They also highlighted provisions aimed at streamlining the election timetable and clarifying the roles of electoral stakeholders to prevent disputes.

Critics, however, have raised concerns that certain sections of the Act could centralize power, limit independent oversight, or create loopholes that could be exploited by political elites. In response, the lawmakers stressed that the legislation was the result of extensive consultations and legal reviews, and that safeguards are in place to protect against abuse.

The debate over the Electoral Act 2026 is expected to continue in the coming weeks as political parties, watchdogs, and the public examine its implications ahead of the next general elections. Lawmakers have urged citizens and stakeholders to engage constructively and focus on reforms that enhance the credibility of the nation’s electoral system.
