Lawyer Condemns Attack on Corps Member in Anambra, Calls It a Disrespect to National Service

Awka, Anambra State – August 21, 2025

The recent assault of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Anambra State has triggered widespread condemnation, with legal experts and civil society groups calling it a serious insult to Nigeria’s national service scheme.

A young corps member, posted to a government office in the state, was reportedly attacked during a disagreement with a local official. The details of the incident are still under investigation, but witnesses say the corps member was physically assaulted and humiliated in the presence of others.

Human rights lawyer Barrister Ifeanyi Okoye described the incident as “an affront to the values of the NYSC and a disgraceful act against a young Nigerian serving the nation.” He stressed that corps members are under federal protection and should be treated with dignity, not violence.

“These young people are giving one year of their lives to serve the country, often far from home and family,” Okoye said. “Assaulting them is not just a criminal act — it’s an attack on national unity and respect for law.”

The NYSC management has confirmed the incident and said disciplinary and legal actions are being considered against those involved. The corps member is reportedly receiving medical attention and psychological support.

Many Nigerians have taken to social media to express their anger and solidarity, using hashtags like #ProtectCorpers and #JusticeForNYSC. The incident has reignited discussions around the safety of corps members across the country, especially those posted to volatile or unsupportive environments.

Analysts say while the NYSC was created to promote national unity and youth development, the scheme can only succeed if participants are guaranteed safety, fair treatment, and respect.

Community leaders and government officials in Anambra have been urged to take swift action, not only to ensure justice in this case but also to reassure current and future corps members of their safety and value.
