A fierce leadership tussle has erupted within the Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) as newly elected executives, led by Rev. John Hayab, demand an immediate handover of all association properties from the outgoing leadership under Rev. Yakubu Pam.
The tension reached a boiling point at a dinner in Kaduna on Monday, March 10, 2025, where 19 Northern state CAN chairmen and the FCT publicly threw their weight behind Hayab, rejecting any attempts by Pam’s administration to hold onto power.
Leadership Legitimacy Under Fire
The crisis stems from allegations that Rev. Pam and Secretary Elder Sunday Oibe overstayed their tenure by nearly three years a move critics describe as an unauthorized power grab.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Elizabeth Azizi, leader of the Northern CAN Women’s Wing, openly slammed Pam’s leadership, urging him to step aside to prevent the Christian body from being dragged into unnecessary disputes.
We urge them to act with maturity. Their tenure expired long ago, and it’s time for a lawful transition.
Calls for Immediate Property Handover
Further intensifying the standoff, Northern CAN Youth Leader, Evangelist Musa Misal, declared the youth’s absolute support for Hayab, warning that all properties belonging to CAN in the 19 states and FCT must be handed over immediately.
The youths stand firmly with the new leadership. This is the kind of leader we have long desired. Pam and Oibe must accept the transition in good faith.
Hayab’s Vision: A United Christian Front or More Division?
In his acceptance speech, Rev. Hayab did not mince words, condemning the deep-seated ethnic and religious divides in Northern Nigeria, which he claimed had hindered growth and peaceful coexistence.
Our region is blessed, but divisions have cost us dearly. It’s time for a new phase one of love, respect, and partnership.
He also vowed to be a strong advocate for Northern Christians, ensuring their voices are heard and rights protected.
We will remain a voice for Northern Christians, defenders of truth, and speakers of truth to power. However, we will do so with love and understanding.
A Gathering of Power Players
The dinner saw a heavyweight lineup of Christian leaders, including Bishop Mohammed Naga (Borno State), Dr. Grace Kaka (Bauchi State), and Rev. Godwin Adole (Sokoto State).
The presence of such influential figures signaled that the battle over Northern CAN’s leadership is far from over, with many questioning whether Pam will bow to pressure or fight back.
A Brewing Storm or a New Era?
As the power struggle deepens, observers fear that this internal war could weaken CAN’s influence in Northern Nigeria at a time when Christian unity is more crucial than ever.
With Pam’s camp yet to respond officially, the big question remains: Will the outgoing leadership peacefully step down, or is Northern CAN heading for a full-blown crisis?
