Some chairmanship aspirants in the upcoming Lagos State Local Government Election have called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) to refrain from undermining the democratic process in its primaries.
The aspirants, representing Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA), issued a statement on Monday in Lagos, urging the party to ensure a fair and transparent selection process.
Speaking on behalf of 12 aspirants, Segun Sekoni and Mustapha Rasheed emphasized that true leadership cannot emerge through the imposition of candidates. They stressed that democracy thrives when the process of choosing leaders is credible, transparent, and acceptable to all stakeholders.
The group also cautioned the APC’s state leadership against accepting false claims of a consensus endorsement for a particular candidate as the LCDA chairmanship nominee. They described this claim as misleading and deceptive.
“This claim that a consensus has been reached within the APC to adopt a candidate as the sole chairmanship nominee for Ojokoro LCDA is false,” they stated. “It is aimed at deceiving the public and undermining the democratic process.”
The aspirants called on the Lagos State APC leadership and relevant authorities to ensure that Ojokoro LCDA conducts a transparent, fair, and credible primary election. They emphasized that no individual or group should have the power to impose candidates contrary to the will of the people, adding, “Ojokoro is not for sale. The people must decide.”
The group further clarified that the list being circulated was merely an attendance record from a meeting with the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, asserting that there was no agreement, vote, or consensus reached at that gathering. They denounced the misinformation as a desperate attempt to gain an unfair advantage and subvert the democratic process.
