Mr. Oluwagbenga Abiola, Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government and a top contender in the upcoming July 12 council elections, has expressed full support for the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s decision to field Mr. Abdulganiyu Obasa as its chairmanship candidate.
In an interview on Wednesday in Lagos, Abiola welcomed the party’s decision and affirmed his unwavering loyalty to the APC and to Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, who is also the party leader in Agege.
Abiola, widely regarded as a political protégé of the Speaker, stated that he remains grateful for the numerous opportunities provided to him throughout his career.
“I will never go against my leader, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa,” Abiola said. “He is the architect of my political journey—appointing me as his Special Assistant on Media in 2015, and later recommending me as Sole Administrator of Agege in 2016, which made me the youngest council boss in Lagos State at the time.”
He further noted his progression to Secretary to the Local Government in 2017 and then to Vice Chairman in 2021, all under the guidance and support of the party and Speaker Obasa.
While acknowledging that he aspired to the chairmanship role, Abiola emphasized his commitment to the party’s collective decision.
“Like every Vice Chairman, I had the ambition to become Chairman. But the party has made its choice, and I fully support it,” he said. “Our leaders and stakeholders have come together and endorsed Abdulganiyu Obasa. I respect that decision and stand firmly with it.”
He reiterated his commitment to party unity and pledged to continue working for the success of the APC in Agege.
“My focus remains on service to the people. I believe more opportunities will come in the future, and I trust my leader to guide me when the time is right,” he added.
Abiola also disclosed that he had instructed members of his political support group, the Obasa Youth Alliance (OYA), to mobilize in support of the party’s candidate.
