Lucky Aiyedatiwa has been officially sworn in as the Governor of Ondo State, marking the beginning of his first full term following his election victory. The inauguration ceremony took place on Monday at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure, two months after his triumph in the gubernatorial election under the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform.
Aiyedatiwa took the oath of office at approximately 12:59 p.m., following his deputy, Olayide Adelami. After the swearing-in, the governor rode in an open van around the complex, waving to an enthusiastic crowd of supporters.
Commitment to Governance
In his inaugural speech, Governor Aiyedatiwa assured the people of Ondo State that his administration would not relent in its efforts to drive development and improve governance.
“We want to assure you that the overwhelming renewed mandate you have given us has placed on us a huge responsibility, and we promise never to rest on our oars,” he stated.
He pledged to lead with dedication and a commitment to the well-being of the people, particularly the vulnerable.
“We will prioritize the welfare of our people, especially the poor, the sick, and the marginalized,” he added.
Economic Plans for Ondo State
Looking ahead, Aiyedatiwa outlined his administration’s economic agenda, promising to enhance the state’s economy by attracting investors.
“In the next four years, we will collaborate with investors and development partners to actualize Port Ondo,” he said.
Additionally, he highlighted plans to tap into the state’s vast bitumen deposits for both local use and export, a move aimed at boosting revenue generation.
Dignitaries in Attendance
The event was graced by several prominent figures, including APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Osun State Governor Bisi Akande, former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba, Minister of Youth Ayodele Olawande, and Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, among others.
Aiyedatiwa’s Road to the Governorship
Aiyedatiwa’s journey to the governorship was marked by stiff competition, particularly from Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, he secured victory in the November 16, 2024, election, where he polled 366,781 votes—more than three times Ajayi’s 117,845 votes.
The APC candidate dominated the election, winning across all 18 local government areas of the state.
Aiyedatiwa initially assumed office as governor on December 27, 2023, following the death of his predecessor, Rotimi Akeredolu, who had handed over power before his passing. His victory in the 2024 election cemented his leadership in the Sunshine State for the next four years.
