Major Scandal: Why a Nigerian General Was Detained Over Coup Rumors

Abuja, Nigeria – October 18, 2025 | Reported by VOP (Voice of the People)

The Nigerian Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) has reportedly detained a Brigadier-General and several other senior military officers over an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Reliable military sources informed VOP News that the detained officers are currently being held in Abuja and other undisclosed locations following intelligence reports linking them to a secret plan to seize power from the democratically elected government.

According to early findings, the alleged plotters were said to have held a series of secret meetings and communications aimed at disrupting constitutional order. Some intelligence reports suggest that the coup was planned to coincide with Nigeria’s October 1st Independence Day parade, but was foiled after early detection by security agencies.

A top Defence Intelligence source who spoke to VOP (Voice of the People) on condition of anonymity confirmed that the arrests were carried out discreetly to avoid panic within the military and the public.

“The Defence Intelligence acted swiftly and decisively after credible information indicated a serious threat to national stability. The suspects are now under interrogation, and more arrests may follow,” the source revealed.

Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters has issued a brief statement describing the detentions as “an internal disciplinary process,” though it stopped short of denying the possibility of a coup-related investigation.

Political observers who spoke to VOP News described the situation as alarming, noting that Nigeria’s democratic system has faced several security challenges in recent years, including internal dissent and growing public dissatisfaction.

As at press time, the government has yet to release the official names of the detained officers, and no formal charges have been filed. The Presidency is expected to address the nation once investigations are concluded.

VOP (Voice of the People) will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates as more details emerge.
