Kaduna Court Jails Man Two Years for Stealing Armoured Cables

A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 29-year-old man, Haruna Abdullahi, to two years’ imprisonment for stealing armoured cables and other electrical items.

Magistrate Lukman Sidi handed down the sentence on Tuesday after Abdullahi pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

Sidi ruled that the convict, who is a resident of Rigasa, would serve the sentence with hard labour and without an option of fine.

“You are hereby sentenced to two years’ imprisonment with hard labour. The sentence should serve as a deterrent to others who might want to engage in similar acts,” the magistrate said.

The court heard that Abdullahi was arraigned on August 12 and admitted to the offence. He was subsequently remanded until sentencing.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Baba, told the court that Abdullahi and two accomplices, who are still at large, committed the offence on August 10 at Kawo, Kaduna.

He said a Federal Highway Patrol team, led by Insp. Suleiman Gambo, intercepted a tricycle carrying the stolen items. The defendant’s accomplices fled upon sighting the officers, leaving Abdullahi behind.

Recovered items included 25 armoured cables, two copper pipes, 11 electronic transmission connectors, and three mini transformer coils, though their total value is yet to be determined.

Baba said the offences contravened the provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
