An Area Court in Jos has sentenced Abdulrazaq Musa to 24 months in prison for stealing three television sets and a car battery, all valued at N125,000.
Presiding Judge, Mrs. Shawomi Bokkos, handed down the sentence on Wednesday after the defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.
The court, however, gave Musa an option to pay a N150,000 fine in lieu of serving the full jail term. Additionally, he was ordered to pay N60,000 as compensation to the complainant, with an extra six months’ imprisonment if he defaults.
Earlier, Prosecutor Inspector Ijuptil Thlawur informed the court that the theft was reported on March 30 by Mr. Atsen Anu at the Nassarawa Gwom Police Station in Jos.
According to the prosecution, Musa unlawfully entered the complainant’s residence and stole the items. During the police investigation, the defendant confessed to the crime.
The offence, the prosecutor noted, is in violation of the Plateau State Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria, 2021.
