An Area Court in Jos has sentenced a mason, Musa Zakari, to six months’ imprisonment for stealing two mobile phones.
Presiding Judge, Mrs. Shawomi Bokkos, delivered the sentence on Wednesday after Zakari pleaded guilty to the charge.
The court offered the convict an option of paying a N30,000 fine in lieu of serving the jail term. Additionally, he was ordered to pay N110,000 in compensation to the complainant. Failure to do so will result in an additional six months in prison.
Earlier, Police Prosecutor, Inspector Labaran Ahmed, told the court that the case was reported at the Anglo Jos Police Station on April 2 by the complainant, Mr. Miri Selnan.
According to the prosecution, Zakari unlawfully entered Selnan’s shop and stole two mobile phones valued at N110,000. During police investigation, the defendant admitted to committing the crime.
The offence, Ahmed noted, contravenes the Plateau State Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria.
