a tragic accident occurred when the Mexican Navy training vessel Cuauhtémoc collided with the Brooklyn Bridge shortly after departing from South Street Seaport in New York City. The crash resulted in the deaths of two naval cadets and left 19 others injured.

The victims, América Yamilet Sánchez, 20, and Adal Jair Maldonado Marcos, 23, were reportedly on the ship’s masts when the collision occurred. The impact snapped all three masts, causing cadets to fall or become  entangled in the rigging.

According to voptv  findings, the ship experienced a sudden loss of power minutes into its voyage. A distress call was issued, but within 45 seconds the vessel—traveling at nearly 7 mph—struck the bridge. Radio recordings revealed urgent requests for tugboat assistance just moments before impact.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched a formal investigation, which is expected to take several months. Although the Brooklyn Bridge sustained only minor damage and has since reopened

the Cuauhtémoc remains docked in Manhattan as inquiries continue.
