Mozambique Swears in New Parliament Amid Election Disputes/Vop

Mozambique’s new parliament has been sworn in, but the event took place under tense circumstances as opposition leaders and their supporters protested the results of the highly contentious October elections.

The streets of Maputo, the capital, were largely deserted following a strike called by the main opposition leader to contest the election outcomes. Adding to the tension, two smaller opposition parties boycotted the parliament’s opening ceremony, refusing to recognize the results.

Despite the unrest, Mozambique’s incoming president, Daniel Chapo, used the occasion to call for calm and unity. His message comes after months of violent clashes and political instability in the country.

The situation underscores the challenges facing Mozambique as it navigates this turbulent political period. Observers continue to urge dialogue and reconciliation to resolve the ongoing disputes.
