Mr. Elvis Laments Prolonged ASUU Strike, Urges NLC to Intervene

A concerned citizen, Mr. Elvis, has expressed disappointment over the prolonged strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), saying the continued standoff between the union and the Federal Government has left many Nigerians in despair.

Speaking during a media chat, Mr. Elvis said he had expected the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to show stronger leadership by stepping in to mediate the crisis, stressing that the situation has gone beyond endurance for students, parents, and lecturers alike.

“I had expected the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to step in and help resolve the ASUU strike, as the situation has become very difficult for many of us,” he said.

He noted that education remains the foundation for national progress, and allowing academic activities to remain suspended for months sends a dangerous signal about the country’s priorities.

According to him, the ongoing impasse has deepened frustration among young Nigerians, many of whom have been idle for too long, leading to increased cases of depression, social vices, and migration pressure.

“We are talking about a generation losing time and opportunity. Every day our schools stay closed, Nigeria loses potential doctors, engineers, teachers, and leaders,” he added.[irp]

Mr. Elvis appealed to both parties to shift grounds in the interest of the nation, urging the NLC to take a more proactive role in facilitating dialogue.

“This is not the time for blame games. The NLC must act as a bridge between the government and ASUU. We cannot continue to watch our education system crumble while leaders trade words,” he said.

He concluded by warning that prolonged academic instability could weaken Nigeria’s global competitiveness and deepen the country’s socioeconomic challenges.
