Mr. Fanimo: Soldiers Break Rules of Engagement to Please Their Commanders

Abuja — Security and public affairs analyst, Mr. Fanimo, has expressed concern over the conduct of some military personnel during operations, alleging that many soldiers disregard rules of engagement in pursuit of personal recognition or commendation from their superiors.

Speaking during a live discussion on VOP TV, Fanimo said the desire to be seen as effective or successful in the field often drives soldiers to act outside professional standards, leading to human rights abuses and collateral damage in conflict zones.

“The military often go against the rules of engagement; what’s on their minds is achieving success so that their commanders will praise them for a job well done,” he stated.

He noted that such behavior undermines the professional image of the Nigerian Armed Forces and erodes public trust, especially in communities already traumatized by insecurity.

Fanimo emphasized that while discipline remains a core principle of military service, the system must also ensure strict accountability and ethical compliance during operations.

“Success in combat shouldn’t be measured only by the number of enemies killed or areas captured, but by how well operations are carried out within the law and with respect for human life,” he added.

He called on the military high command to strengthen oversight mechanisms, provide continuous training on rules of engagement, and ensure that field officers are held accountable for misconduct.

Analysts say Fanimo’s comments reflect growing concern over alleged excesses by security forces in counter-insurgency operations, particularly in the North-East and other flashpoints across Nigeria.
