Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is set to add another app called Threads to its portfolio.

The app, which has a dashboard with a similar look to that of the popular online social media and social networking service Twitter, is set for release on Thursday, July 6, 2023.

The application, currently available for pre-order on the Apple App Store, will be linked to its sister company Instagram.

A listing for the app, which appeared on Apple’s App Store, described Threads as an Instagram text-based conversation app.

The app description says, “Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow. Whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions, and creativity with the world.”

The Twitter alternative app will operate like Twitter’s, featuring text-based posts that users can like, comment on, and share. The app is also designed in such a way that users will be able to follow the same accounts they follow on Instagram as well as keep their Instagram usernames.

This marks the most recent developments in the rivalry between Meta owner Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter’s new boss, Elon Musk. Recall that the two tech billionaires had recently challenged themselves to a cage fight, which is not certain if they were serious or were only joking.

This is, however, not the first time an app identical to Twitter has sprung up in recent times. Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s Truth Social and Bluesky by the former Twitter owner, Jack Dorsey, also have glaring similarities with Twitter. (Nigerian Tribune)
