NEC Meeting: Kwankwaso Has No Authority Over NNPP’s 2027 Alliances – National Chairman

The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Agbo Major, has dismissed Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s claim that the party is open to alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that the former presidential candidate has no authority to speak on behalf of the NNPP.

Major stated this in Lagos on Friday while reacting to Kwankwaso’s remarks at a meeting of his Kwankwasiya group in Abuja, where the former Kano governor suggested the NNPP was considering partnerships with other parties.

The NNPP chairman described the meeting as null and void, stressing that the Kwankwasiya Movement had ceased to be part of the party after the 2023 elections. He recalled that Kwankwaso and his group were expelled for alleged anti-party activities, while a court-ordered convention produced new party leadership, which the NNPP has since asked INEC to recognise.

“Any Nigerian entering into any alliance with Kwankwaso and his Kwankwasiya group on the basis of the NNPP will be doing so at their own risk,” Major warned.

He accused Kwankwaso of betraying the party’s trust in 2023 and cautioned against further attempts to use the NNPP’s name for political negotiations. “Aside from the obvious betrayal of trust, Kwankwaso has continued to use the NNPP name to make statements that could cause unrest in the country,” he said, citing the former minister’s recent criticism of the Federal Government over projects in the North.

Major emphasised that while the NNPP remained open to alliances with other political parties, such arrangements would not be driven by personal vendetta. He assured that the party would provide equal opportunities for aspirants through primaries and pledged that the leadership would not allow a repeat of the 2023 experience.

He also urged INEC to expedite recognition of the NNPP’s new leadership, in line with court rulings. “It is our hope that INEC, as a federal institution, will uphold the rule of law and do the needful,” he added.
