NEMA Flags Off Emergency Relief Distribution for Victims of Enugu Tanker Fire/Vop

The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, alongside her team, has commenced the distribution of emergency intervention items to victims of the devastating tanker fire that occurred on Saturday at Ugwu Onyeama, along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

The tragic incident claimed several lives and left many others injured, prompting swift intervention from both federal and state authorities. While mourning the lives lost and supporting the survivors, the Enugu State Government has reiterated the need to address the root causes of such disasters.

Governor Peter Mbah emphasized the urgent enforcement of anti-spill locks on fuel tankers transporting inflammable products, stressing that such a measure would significantly reduce the risk of spills that often lead to deadly infernos. He called on law enforcement agencies, particularly the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), to ensure strict compliance with this safety requirement nationwide.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State Government has committed to covering the medical expenses of all survivors currently receiving treatment at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu; the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla; and the Enugu State University of Science and Technology Hospital, Park Lane.

Governor Mbah expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and NEMA for their prompt response and humanitarian support. He noted that the relief materials provided would bring much-needed relief to affected families and highlighted the importance of collaboration between federal and state governments during emergencies.
