Nepal Hosts First Hot Air Balloon Festival, Showcasing Himalayan Beauty/Vop

With the snowy peaks of the Himalayas as a backdrop, Nepal’s skies above Pokhara were awash with vibrant colors as the country hosted its first-ever hot-air balloon festival. The international event brought together balloons from more than 10 countries, creating a mesmerizing display against the majestic Annapurna mountain range.

Tourism, a vital sector for Nepal, has rebounded strongly post-pandemic, with over a million foreign visitors this year. The government has been investing heavily in hotels and airports to accommodate the influx of travelers, and the festival is expected to further boost the sector.

“We felt that we must bring a balloon festival like this to Nepal,” said Sabin Maharjan, one of the event organizers. “A ride here can be very exciting as you can see mountains, hills, and lakes. All passengers tell us that they are very happy — such a festival will boost our tourism.”

Spectacular Views

The festival offered breathtaking views of the snow-capped Himalayas, with pilots and passengers alike marveling at the scenery. “It is spectacular,” said American balloon pilot Derek Hamcock, 67. “As soon as you go above the small range here, you see all the Himalayas. Unbelievable, every time you see them it is unbelievable.”

Balloon designs included whimsical shapes like a frog and a rat, delighting onlookers as they drifted with the breeze. Spanish balloon pilot Diego Criado del Rey, 29, highlighted the unique experience of ballooning. “You never know where you are going,” he said. “It’s pretty much you and nature — not fighting, but being together. You go where the nature tells you.”

A Nine-Day Celebration

To accommodate the festival, Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority designated a nine-day window for balloon flights over Pokhara, ensuring safety and clear skies for participants.

Although ballooning technology has advanced since the Montgolfier brothers’ first manned flight over two centuries ago, the activity continues to captivate imaginations worldwide. The inaugural festival in Nepal underscores this enduring fascination, while also strengthening the country’s reputation as a premier travel destination.
