NGO Demands Action on Women, Peace and Security Policy in Katsina

The Gender Awareness Trust (GAT) has mobilised stakeholders in Katsina State to push for the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) policy.

Halima Abba-Ibrahim, a representative of the NGO, disclosed this on Friday during a meeting on the Building Inclusive Peace (BIP) project in the state, organised by GAT in collaboration with Tetra Spring Tech.

She explained that the engagement focused on strategies for enforcing the WPS State Action Plan (SAP), recently approved by Governor Dikko Radda. “The mechanism can be a group, organisation, or association working on peace and WPS. After identifying them, we can collaborate to ensure successful implementation in Katsina,” she said.

The WPS agenda is a global framework designed to promote women’s participation and perspectives in peace and security efforts. According to Abba-Ibrahim, the initiative seeks to foster inclusive and sustainable peace in Kaduna and Katsina states by strengthening community resilience and enhancing gender-responsive prevention.

She outlined the objectives of the meeting to include identifying existing peace and WPS structures, mapping key actors, and highlighting priorities for stronger coordination and collaboration. Expected outcomes include a comprehensive list of state agencies, security actors, traditional and religious leaders, CSOs, youth and women’s groups, as well as documentation of peace committees, SAP coordination platforms, gender desks in security agencies, and mediation groups.
