Niger Army Kills Boko Haram Commander in Lake Chad Strike

The Nigerien army has confirmed the death of Bakura Doro, a notorious Boko Haram commander, during a targeted airstrike on Shilawa Island in the Lake Chad basin  precision operation took place in the Diffa region, near the borders with Nigeria, Chad, and Cameroon.

Bakura Doro, also known as Abu Umaimata or Abu Umayma, had been a leading figure in Boko Haram for more than a decade.

After the death of the group’s founder, Abubakar Shekau, in 2021, he led a splinter faction that refused to merge with ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province).

His death marks a significant blow to Boko Haram’s operations in the Lake Chad region

The loss of such a senior figure could deepen internal divisions within the fractured insurgent movement.

It signals growing coordination and effectiveness in Niger’s fight against extremist groups threatening West Africa
