Nigeria has officially become the second most decorated country in the history of the FIBA Women’s Afro Basket Championship, following D’Tigress’ dominant performance and fifth consecutive title win at the 2025 edition in Kigali, Rwanda.
With this historic victory, Nigeria now holds seven Afro Basket titles, surpassing Senegal in consecutive wins and closing in on the overall record of 11 titles still held by Senegal, who finished as runners-up in the latest tournament.
The Nigerian women’s basketball team, known as D’Tigress, has now cemented its status as a continental powerhouse, showcasing excellence, resilience, and unity. Their consistent dominance since 2017 has inspired a new generation of female athletes across Africa.
Reacting to the achievement, Basketball Federation officials and fans across the country hailed the players and coaching staff for rewriting history. “This is not just a win on the court—it’s a win for Nigerian women, youth, and sport development,” said Bisi Olawunmi, a Lagos-based sports journalist.
