Nigeria has launched exports of a newly discovered crude oil blend named Obodo , adding to its diverse range of oil grades. The Obodo blend, produced by local firm Continental Oil & Gas from the onshore OML 150 in the Niger Delta, is a medium-sweet crude with an API gravity of 27.65 and a low sulphur content
of 0.05%.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) is overseeing the marketing and export of the new blend, which is primarily targeted at the European market. European refineries, particularly those coming back online after seasonal maintenance, are expected to benefit from Obodo’s low sulphur content and favorable refining qualities.
Obodo joins a growing list of new Nigerian crude grades introduced in recent years, including Nembe (2023) and Utapate (2024), as the country seeks to strengthen its presence in the global oil market. The introduction of these new blends reflects Nigeria’s strategic push to diversify its crude exports and capitalize on rising oil prices.
As global demand continues to grow, the debut of Obodo positions Nigeria to boost revenue and attract greater interest from international buyers, especially in regions prioritizing cleaner-burning fuels.
