Airline Operators in Nigeria have confirmed that they are now sourcing Jet A1 fuel from Dangote’s refinery, marking a shift towards local supply in response to the high costs of importing fuel. Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, spokesperson for the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), stated that the industry has been purchasing Jet A1 from Dangote for a few months. The fluctuating costs of Jet A1 are influenced by factors like location and airport.
An industry official explained that the move to collaborate with Dangote was driven by the skyrocketing cost of imported Jet A1. The hope is that local sourcing will reduce expenses. However, ongoing discussions between Dangote and NNPC have delayed final agreements on price and supply quantities.
The Federal Government recently designated Dangote Refinery as the sole supplier of jet fuel to the aviation sector, following a naira-for-crude agreement with Dangote and other local refiners. This development is expected to stabilize fuel supply and possibly lower costs for airline operators in the long run.
