Nigerian Catholic Priest Arrested Over Shooting Incident in Imo State

Rev. Fr. Joseph Enyinnaya, a Catholic priest, has been taken into custody by authorities in Imo State following a tragic incident during the New Year’s Eve Mass at St. Columba’s Catholic Church, Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area. Reports indicate that the priest accidentally shot a teenager to death while attempting to scare away individuals throwing fireworks inside and outside the church premises.

The Catholic Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius I. Ugorji, has expressed deep sorrow and sympathy to the family of the deceased. In a statement, he offered prayers for the repose of the soul of the young victim, healing for any others affected, and assured the community of a thorough investigation into the incident. The Archbishop also called on the people of Amaimo to remain calm and peaceful as the authorities address the matter.

This unfortunate event has shocked the local community, and the Catholic Church has pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation while supporting the affected family during this difficult time.
