Nigerian Immigration Service Announces New Passport Fees

According to the announcement, the review is part of government efforts to improve service delivery, upgrade facilities, and make the passport system more secure. The new rates, which take effect soon, apply to different categories such as the 32-page and 64-page booklets, as well as the validity periods of 5 and 10 years.

This represents a 100 percent increase from the previous fees of ₦50,000 and ₦100,000 respectively. The NIS explained that the review was necessary to improve service delivery, upgrade facilities, and enhance the security features of Nigerian passports.

For Nigerians applying from abroad, the charges remain unchanged — $150 for a 32-page booklet and $230 for a 64-page booklet.

While officials argue that the adjustment is necessary to cover rising operational costs and align Nigeria with international standards, the news has sparked mixed reactions. Many Nigerians worry that higher fees will put additional pressure on households already struggling with inflation and a high cost of living.
