The Nigerian Navy, on Sunday, said its operatives in Rivers State have intercepted about 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined petroleum products.
Director of Naval Information, Commodore Abiodun Folorunsho, disclosed the interception via a statement he issued in Abuja.
Folorunsho disclosed that the operation that led to the arrest of about eight suspects was carried out under Operation DELTA SENTINEL by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS PATHFINDER in the Degema/Ogbogoro/Ogbologo axis.
The Navy spokesperson explained that the naval patrol team, who were acting on credible intelligence, intercepted two wooden boats laden with suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil, AGO.
He noted that though some armed accomplices fled the scene upon sighting the patrol team, the main suspects were apprehended.
Folorunsho stated that the suspects and the recovered products were still in custody, stating that they would soon be handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation.
