NLC SUSPENDS STRIKE IN IMO

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC in Imo State have suspended their indefinite strike in the state.

The national leadership of the NLC and TUC had, on May 1st, declared an indefinite strike over an attack by suspected political thugs on their members and the disruption of their 2023 May Day celebration in the state.

The labour unions, in a communique jointly issued by the NLC National General-Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja and his TUC counterpart, Nuhu Toro, had alleged that agents of the Imo State Government carried out the attack against the workers.

But on Monday, six days after, the unions and the Imo State Government agreed to end the industrial action in the state after a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by some representatives of the labour unions and the state government.

Meanwhile, a civic group called the Coalition for True Governance has called for the impeachment of Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma for failing to protect the lives and property of citizens and refusing to pay workers’ salaries.

The group also called on the Nigerian security agencies to beam their searchlight on Imo State following a recent spate of killings amid the workers’ strike.

This was contained in a statement signed by its convener, Charles Odenigbo, noting that the governor had a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of the people of Imo State, as well as to ensure that public services were functioning effectively.

The group further called on lawmakers in the state to rise up and consider the option of Impeachment should the spate of insecurity in the state continue
