The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC have decided to begin an indefinite nationwide strike on October 3rd, 2023, as a result of what the labour unions have labelled as the government’s “failure” to put policies in place to ease Nigerians’ suffering after the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit.

The national president of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, informed the NEC members at a virtual National Executive Council meeting via Zoom today that a meeting had been conducted with TUC representatives to discuss next steps.

Ajaero stated that it was decided that the two centres should collaborate in order to communicate their position to the government.

The NLC had given the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum, to implement the demands they had asked for, which ended last week.

The NLC President lamented that “none of the demands put before the Federal Government had been addressed.”

In preparation for the longer strike later in the month, the union initially staged a two-day countrywide warning strike on September 5 and 6.
