Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has declared that he has no preferred or anointed candidate for the 2027 general elections, urging leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to avoid premature succession politics.
Speaking during a meeting with APC leaders and stakeholders in Maiduguri, Zulum cautioned against internal divisions fueled by early politicking, stressing that his priority remains governance and service delivery to the people of Borno State.
The governor emphasized that any attempt to impose a candidate ahead of 2027 would be detrimental to party unity and democratic principles. According to him, the APC must allow due process, internal democracy, and the will of party members to determine its future candidates when the appropriate time comes.
“I have no anointed candidate for 2027. My focus is on delivering good governance, consolidating peace, and rebuilding Borno. Politics of succession should wait,” Zulum reportedly told party leaders.
He further warned that internal wrangling and power struggles could weaken the party and distract the government from addressing critical challenges such as security, resettlement of displaced persons, and economic recovery.
Zulum called on APC leaders to remain united, loyal to the party, and supportive of ongoing efforts to stabilize and develop the state, adding that the success of the APC in future elections depends on discipline, inclusiveness, and collective responsibility.
The governor’s statement comes amid growing speculation and behind-the-scenes maneuvering over who will succeed him when his tenure ends in 2027.
